Kew Gardens Food Scrap Drop Off is Over (for now?)

UPDATE 3-29-24

For over a decade Big Reuse has used its Queens Composting site to turn millions of pounds of nutrient-rich compost from food scraps and leaf and yard waste into fuel for urban farms, home and community gardens, and street tree beds. Now they face eviction in June by the NY City Parks Dept to turn it into a parking lot (despite strong opposition from elected officials and community members!). You can read in detail about what’s happening here.

UPDATE:

December 17th was the last day for the Kew Gardens Sunday Food Scrap-Drop-Off.

Mayor Adams budget proposal eliminated funding for community composting and curbside composting outreach in 2024, ending 115 greens jobs and the support for community composting at 8 organizations – Big Reuse, GrowNYC, LESEC, Earth Matters, Queens Botanical Garden, NY Botanical Garden,  Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Snug Harbor.

If you have not already, please sign the petition to revive Community Composting and write your representatives. Stay in touch by visiting Big Reuse’s blog for regular updates, and sign up for their newsletter.

Kew Gardens FSDO gives thanks to everybody for the scraps, for positivity, for caring. Thanks to Big Reuse, Queens Botanical Garden and NYC Compost Project. Thanks to Kew Gardens Cinemas for sponsoring our project, and our Kew Gardens Community.

The FSDO team: Christina, Christopher, Hope, Jason, Kevin, Linda, Maria, Marilyn, Ron & Scarlett. 12/17/23

The Kew Gardens CSA Food Scrap Drop-Off is in the cinemas park on Sundays from 8:30am to Noon. Bring us your food scraps, leaves, yard waste. We are volunteer-powered. Would you like to help? One-hour shifts available!

FYI, we will NOT be open on Sunday 12/25/2022 and Sunday 1/1/2023

“Loved this week’s share! Made a truly delicious butternut squash, apple and turnip soup! This is a great recipe: https://www.loveandlemons.com/butternut-squash-soup/

I’m eating it with a generous helping of sautéed greens — farm chard, kale, turnip greens, onions, and garlic plus fresh ginger, lemon and cumin. My kids are enjoying it over noodles and steamed farm broccoli : ) ” —-Sofia
